Pitfall review Often regarded as one of the best Atari 2600 titles ever made, Pitfall is a masterpiece created by Activision. It was groundbreaking in 1982, for its great gameplay and innovative design. The platformer genre wasn't exactly a full on genre, after all there were not a whole lot of platformers Donkey Kong is the only one I can easily recall I'm sure there were a few others. Gameplay B+: This game has aged very well. Most of the elements, from control, to design. Have aged well. Pitfalls control is excellent, but I wouldn't recommend a joystick for this game. If your using a real Atari I recommend the Sega Genesis controller for this game. The style of gameplay was a relatively new thing in 1982, and it was done well in this game. The obstacles come in a large variety. However, the design of the game, does feel repetitive. I know this game was released 31 years ago, but a flaw is a flaw and there is no changing that. The screens all look similar over time, but the game is still fun. If you go through enough of the game you'll eventually encounter treasures like gold, diamond rings, iron (I think,) and MONEY. These treasures will give a ton of points and they are satisfying to pick up. Graphics A: This game surprised the crap out of me. Many Atari games only had a few colors with few sprites and little detail, but this game is freaking beautiful for an Atari 2600 game. Pitfall Harry is fluidly animated, and the playfield is packed with color and detail, along with that, the sprites are high in detail, and resolution. Also the background is filled with detail, I really felt like I was in a jungle. Pitfall pushes the Atari 2600 to its limits, but it only gets better in the sequel which was released in 1984, on the Atari 2600, just like this game. Sound B+: The sound is pretty good, there are a wide variety of sound effects, that have charm, and sound pretty good. Other then that, I really don't have a whole lot to say about this section. Addictivness A: This game will keep you hooked. You can play for high score, but that's only the beginning. Experts will want to see how far they can go, before the time runs out, and this is what makes the game addicting. Depth B: The game has 255 screens but most of them look similar, its still fairly big for an Atari game. There are no different variations, but the game itself is large. Difficulty Medium: The game might seem difficult at first but once you have the hang of it, its pretty easy. Overall rating B+ Graphics 9 Sound 8 Addictive 9 Depth 8 Difficulty 7
Pitfall! is a platform action game. You play Pitfall Harry who is on a quest to locate treasure deep in the jungle. With a little luck you'll be able to find money bags, silver bars, gold bars, and diamond rings. But many obstacles will get in the way, some of which merely deduct points from your score, while others are fatal. Rolling logs and falling down a hole will deduct points, and scorpions, alligators, snakes, bottomless pits, swamps, and fires will cause Pitfall Harry to lose a life. You have 20 minutes to try to collect all of the treasures on the numerous screens, if you can live that long!

CarBitGTSaxen 01-20-12 - 07:36 AM you move with arrows keys it is so simple The player must maneuver a character (Pitfall Harry) through a maze-like jungle in an attempt to recover 32 treasures in a 20-minute time period. Along the way, he must negotiate numerous hazards, including pits, quicksand, rolling logs, fire, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and crocodiles. Harry may jump over or otherwise avoid these obstacles by climbing, running, or swinging on vines. Treasure includes gold and silver bars, diamond rings, and bags of money. Under the jungle there is a tunnel which Harry can access through ladders found at various points. Travelling though the tunnel moves forward three screens at a time, which is necessary in order to collect all the treasures within the time limit. However, the tunnels are filled with dead-ends blocked by brick walls, forcing the player to return to the surface at one of the ladders, and try to find a way around again, thus wasting time. The tunnels also contain scorpions, which can harm Harry. Pitfall! was created by David Crane, a programmer who worked for Activision in the early 1980s. The game's technical achievements included non-flickering, multicolored, animated sprites on a system with notoriously primitive graphics hardware. Innovative techniques were used to keep the code space within the 4k limit, including a polynomial counter to create 256 screens within 50 bytes of code. The vines were drawn as a stretched 'ball'. Pitfall! is seen as an important early game in the side-scrolling platforming genre; although it did not scroll itself, it had all the features of such games, such as the ability to travel up and down on multiple levels of play. The game was also much longer than other Atari 2600 games of its time, which typically lasted only a few minutes. This was due to the majority of such games being ports of arcade games, where short play time encouraged players to spend more money. The twenty minute time limit was unprecedented, and marked an important point of transition between the arcade and home video game markets.
